Contributing Our Bits to Make a Difference

Students from School of English Language and Culture Volunteered in Nepal

Following Wang Hang who pursued volunteer work in Nepal last year, three students from School of English Language and Culture volunteered for two weeks in the Teaching in Schools Program of Nepal Volunteers Council. They are Hu Qiuchi, Sun Furu, Shao Youran.

The trip to Nepal brought to them a brand-new cultural experience and a set of refreshing values of the world. During their stay, they witnessed not only the beauty of Nepal, but also the optimistic attitude towards life of every Nepalese. In Nepal, people are nice to each other, even strangers. They say "Namaste" ("hello" in Nepali) all the time and always have a big smile on their face.

Despite the lack of educational facilities and resources, Nepali children are always optimistic and have great passion for study. Many students’ home are far from their school, which is why they have to get up early in the morning and spend about an hour to get to school every day.

By joining this program, volunteers from our university got an opportunity to teach Nepalese kids in the original Nepalese setting and made a contribution to the education sector in Nepal. They also got to know a quite different country and experience a rather distinct culture during their two-week stay. They may not change the world, but they are always willing to do their bits to make even a small difference to this world.
